Manila is home to many famous tourist sites connected to a long history, and it’s also a shopping paradise for fashion lovers. The main character of this case was Christine Angelica Dacera. She was born on April 13, 1997, in General Santos, Philippines.
She was the second of four children. Since childhood, Dacera had been very beautiful and was constantly praised by neighbors. Besides her appearance, she also studied diligently, becoming the “ideal daughter” in the eyes of many parents.After finishing high school, she attended Mindanao University in the Philippines. She had a cheerful personality and often shared her life on social media. She also actively participated in beauty, dance, and modeling competitions and achieved good results. In 2017, she competed in Miss Universe Philippines and won the title of first runner-up. In the following two years, Dacera continued to work actively in modeling and beauty, though she hadn’t yet built a strong reputation. After that, she shifted her focus to a dream job many girls long for: becoming a flight attendant.
Because Dacera was truly outstanding, she passed the selection process smoothly and officially became a flight attendant for Philippine Airlines. In 2019, for work convenience, she moved to Manila, the capital of the Philippines. After becoming a flight attendant, Dacera lived a very happy life.
She often shared beautiful photos of herself online. With her tall, sweet appearance, she quickly gained over 160,000 followers and became a small social media celebrity. On December 28, 2020, Dacera posted a photo with the caption: “Last flight of the year.” Little did she know it would be the last flight of her life.December 31, 2020, was a truly special day for many people — crossing into a new year symbolizes new beginnings. Dacera also wanted to do something memorable for the occasion.
After thinking it over, she planned to invite a few friends to celebrate New Year’s Eve together. Coincidentally, at that time, three of her friends also invited her out. Their meeting place was the 4-star City Garden Hotel in Makati. That day, Dacera checked into the hotel with three friends: Romeo Galido, Gregorio de Guzman, and John dela Serna. They registered for room 2209. At first, it was just a small gathering of four people, but then her three friends invited eight more people to join the party.
Those eight checked into room 2207, right next door to 2209. Notably, Dacera didn’t know these eight additional guests. Aside from her, all 11 others were men.
A party with only one woman and eleven men — you can easily imagine what the atmosphere might have been like. The twelve of them drank and partied until around 5–6 a.m. After a wild night, everyone fell into a deep sleep. In the blink of an eye, it was already 10 a.m. the next day. Galido was the first to wake up. He sleepily walked into the bathroom and saw Dacera lying in the bathtub. He assumed she had drunk too much the night before and had fallen asleep there. Instead of waking her up, he simply placed a blanket over her and went back to bed. Around noon, he woke up again and went to check whether she had woken up yet. From a distance, he noticed her face had turned an abnormal shade of blue. Feeling something was wrong, he leaned in to check her breathing — and froze instantly. She had already passed away. Panicking, he immediately called his two friends, de Guzman and dela Serna, to help. The three of them had never experienced anything like this before, so they were completely panicked. At first, they tried to perform CPR to save her, but it didn’t work. Shortly after, the three of them, along with hotel staff, rushed her to Makati Hospital.Doctors concluded that she had already passed away before being brought in. The cause of death was a ruptured aortic aneurysm. On January 2, 2021, a forensic autopsy was conducted, and the results matched the hospital’s conclusion: she had died from a ruptured aortic aneurysm.
However, the forensic team also found bruises and marks on her right arm, right thigh, knees, and ankles. There were also scratches on her underwear. More importantly, there were abrasions and tears in her intimate area. These findings hinted that she might have been violently assaulted before she died, possibly triggering the rupture of the aneurysm. Makati police chief Harold Depositar concluded that this was potentially a criminal case involving the eleven men who had been with her, and all of them became suspects. Seminal fluid was also found inside her body, which became a key piece of physical evidence in the case. National Police Chief Debold Sinas announced that three of the men had been arrested, while the remaining eight were being hunted. He urged the remaining suspects to surrender within 72 hours or face serious consequences.
As soon as the information was released, the entire country was shaken. A flight attendant, eleven men, a wild New Year’s Eve—and a tragic ending. Public outrage erupted. Many condemned the eleven men and hoped the police would punish them severely. Others blamed the victim for partying too recklessly and crossing the line.
According to the police, the case seemed straightforward: arrest the suspects and interrogate them. But then the case suddenly took a dramatic turn.The three arrested suspects repeatedly insisted that they were innocent.
They said they were very close to the victim and would never hurt her. They claimed she had died of natural causes and that they had nothing to do with it. All three openly said they were only attracted to men, not women. They were gay, and she knew that, which was why she felt comfortable partying with them. Yes, everyone drank a lot that night, but nothing more happened.
They also revealed that the eight other men they invited were also gay. None of them were attracted to women, so they would not have assaulted her. As the story spread online, more witnesses came forward, confirming that the suspects were indeed gay and had no history of harming anyone.
Families of the eleven suspects then stepped in, questioning the police’s competence.
They argued that the police had jumped to conclusions without proper investigation. It didn’t make sense.Even the police themselves found it strange that so many gay men were suddenly involved in the case. Had they been wrong about the entire situation? Reviewing the investigation, several inconsistencies and flaws became clear.First, although police claimed to have found seminal fluid in the victim’s body, they had not yet conducted a DNA comparison with the suspects. Announcing conclusions without DNA testing was highly irregular.
Second, the forensic report showed injuries on her body, but could not determine how those injuries were caused.Third, CCTV footage revealed that she behaved comfortably and voluntarily around the men in rooms 2207 and 2209. There was no sign of coercion. At 11:38 p.m. on December 31, she was seen holding a bottle of wine while playfully chasing two men between the two rooms. She also called her mother and said she was having a wonderful New Year’s Eve at the hotel.
At 2:50 a.m., she was recorded walking out of room 2209 holding hands with a man, smiling happily. Two minutes later, the man escorted her back to the door of the same room. She tried to kiss him, though he looked uncomfortable and focused on knocking on the door. That man was later confirmed to be Gumen, one of her close friends.
At 4:13 a.m., she appeared more intoxicated and stiff, and someone helped her back to room 2209. At 6:23 a.m., CCTV showed Gumen carrying her back to the room again.
There was also a photo taken by a friend shortly before she died, showing her sitting in front of the toilet, drunk, flashing a peace sign.When the CCTV footage went public, many people felt her friends seemed genuinely concerned about her, constantly checking on her and carrying her back to the room. Their behavior didn’t resemble that of criminals.Based on these findings, the police released the three suspects and changed their stance. Samples taken from the victim may have been contaminated during embalming. The conclusion was that she died from natural causes unrelated to the eleven men.
The public was stunned. One moment the police were hunting the suspects and calling it a serious crime; the next moment, all of them were innocent. The situation felt absurd.As expected, the public began criticizing the police for incompetence. Others accused the police and the suspects of colluding, since all eleven men came from wealthy families. Many believed that money and connections were being used behind the scenes to pressure the authorities.
In response, citizens began demanding that the government reopen the investigation and conduct a proper, transparent review of the entire case. If corruption is involved, justice cannot be served. With so many injuries found on her body, Dacera’s family firmly believed that their daughter had been drugged and abused. Even though she had already been buried, her mother stated that she was willing to have her daughter’s body exhumed for further examination if necessary in order to uncover the truth.
Her family also denounced the police reports and the medical findings. The death certificate claimed the body had been embalmed beforehand, which was clearly inaccurate and contradictory. They believed the police had worked carelessly and negligently, so they filed a lawsuit.
Her mother even called on the President of the Philippines to seek justice for her daughter. By January 27, 2021, after a long investigation, the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation held a second hearing and released the final forensic report. The report stated that her heart weighed 500 grams, while a normal heart is only about 300 grams.
Signs of internal hemorrhage were also found in her kidneys, and the cause of death was confirmed to be a ruptured aortic aneurysm — not homicide. It was believed that excessive excitement and overstimulation may have raised her blood pressure to a dangerous level, leading to the rupture. Police also found a white powder in the hotel room, but after testing, it turned out to be nothing more than mold, not illegal substances.
They also conducted toxicology tests on the 11 suspects and found nothing abnormal. No illegal drugs were found in Dacera’s system — only traces of medication used to treat high blood pressure. The police still could not determine how the bruises on her body were caused.
However, her three friends said that the injuries may have resulted from her stumbling while drunk, causing them to bump into each other. Additionally, when they tried to take her to the hospital, the hotel provided a wheelchair because she could no longer sit up, so she may have been scratched during transport.
On April 23, 2021, the police released a 19-page report stating that the evidence provided was insufficient to prove the case was a homicide. Her friends had administered CPR and sought help from the hotel as soon as she was found unresponsive. They also had no motive to harm her. Eventually, the police officially dismissed all accusations against the 11 men due to lack of evidence, and the case was closed.
Even though the case was officially closed, public debate did not stop. Dacera’s family continued to accuse the 11 men of committing a crime and lying. Meanwhile, five of the eleven men filed complaints against Dacera’s family for falsely accusing innocent people and defaming them online. On February 7, 2022, more than a year after Dacera’s death, the police dismissed all remaining complaints and accusations related to her passing.
They indirectly informed the public that the case was over and that people should stop wasting time and energy on it. The main reason the case flipped so dramatically was because the lead investigator, Harold Deposita, had made careless statements, publicly declaring it a murder without proper investigation. He immediately accused the 11 men of killing her, which was clearly irresponsible. On top of that, the autopsy report by forensic examiner Michael Lixamento was found to be neither rigorous nor sufficiently accurate. As a result, both of them were dismissed from their positions. The incident also occurred during the pandemic, when regulations stated that only two people were allowed in a room. However, City Garden Hotel allowed the group to hold a New Year’s Eve party in the suite. Because of this, the hotel was suspended for six months and fined 10,000 pesos, roughly 4 million VND.
What’s striking is that, after reading various discussions online, it seems most people blamed Dacera. Even if she enjoyed partying, that is not something anyone should die for. If anything, this tragedy should serve as a reminder for everyone to be cautious. We should not blame the victim or say things like “she didn’t respect herself, so she deserved it.” Everyone has the right to live freely.
